Babies, Not Birds and Bees

Life Before Birth The kids and I studied human birth and development this year and I had to pass along a fantastic resource for Christian parents: Life Before Birth. It doesn't tell the whole story of conception so it's appropriate for younger kids. It also discounts the evolutionary dogma that leads to pro-abortion attitudes. If you're a homeschooler, this a wonderful resource. But if you're just a mom or grandma who wants to share the miracle of conception and birth with your children, this book is a must-have!

Trimming the dog

Here she is. You can't see the choppiness on the sides. LOL

The Difficulty of Doing

I continue to be fascinated by procrastination and in a broader sense by motivation. I am still using AutoFocus to get things done (see www.markforster.net for more information. I notice time and time again that the tasks that get left on my list are those that I don't know how to do.

My mother loves to remind me that I didn't want to go to school because I couldn't read and I didn't want to take swimming lessons because I couldn't swim. I could actually do both but I didn't have the competence I thought would be expected of me.

With my history of fear of failure, incompetence, rejection or whatever it is, I should not be surprised that novel tasks are put off. My most recent new projects were grooming my dog and making beef jerky. Adding to my fear of grooming my dog were my relatives who said to take her to a pro. I was afraid I would hurt her at worst and make her ugly at best.

The jerky making project involved using an electric slicer for the first time. At worst I was afraid of hurting myself. Then I dealt with the fear that I had wasted a lot of money on a slicer and dehydrator and meat for no return.

Despite the fear I attacked both projects. Most likely my fear of spending money on equipment I never used outweighed my fear of messing up. I also used some positive self-talk:

These things take practice. You'll get better at them.
If it just doesn't work, you can get help.
You have taught yourself to do many other scary things.
Just doing it is less anxiety provoking than seeing it on your list every day.

The end of the story is the dog is groomed. I did hurt her once, but she has forgiven me. She looks much better. Does she look professional? No. The great thing is it was much easier than I imagined; I learned something new. I saved money.

I also made fabulous beef jerky with no additives. It was so much easier and faster than I thought it would be. I didn't get cut. The pieces are too small but otherwise I am thrilled.

What are you procrastinating doing because you don't know how? Talk to yourself like a coach would and just do it! You will be so glad you did.

Looking for a Transformation?

Bill Phillips
If you are inspired by stories of changed lives, look no further than Transformation.com. Bill Phillips's new website has photos and videos of dramatic transformations. If you need a little push to get in shape, put your life back together after tough times, or help breaking free of addiction, you may find it here. What you won't find, however, is consistent Christian teaching. Although some of the people profiled are clearly Christians, many are not. As a warning, the discussion on the forum is quite New Age. My Bible-based opinion is that true transformation is not possible by searching within or focusing on some "light," but only by the power of God working in and through you.

Photo Forgiveness in a Flash

IMG_1737-1
A common source of guilt is piles or files of unorganized photos. I have loads of photos and guilt, too. I still have every intention of purging and sorting my printed and digital pics as well as scrapbooking them, but if and until that happens, I have a great solution: make a photobook.

I made a beautiful photobook of my mother-in-law's life in about a day and that includes the time spent scanning photos. My husband turned 50 in February and I decided to make him an even less time-intensive book. I used only digital photos. I reviewed all the photos I've taken over the past 5 years and let me tell you I have a bunch! But I was pleasantly surprised by how little time it took.

To make a quick, guilt-reducing photo book, first begin looking through your photos of your subject. If you have printed photos, pull them out and put them in a separate box or envelope. Before removing them, note where they're taken from. Use a sticky note to mark the page of albums where a photo has been removed. For digital photos, create an album file or tag to indicate which photos will go into the book.

The second step is to organize your photos. Because I didn't have exact dates for my mother-in-law's book, I realized that the photos would be easy to organize by decade. For my husband's book, I found that I could organize them into shots by himself, with me, with each of the individual children, with the kids in groups, with our family in groups, with his extended family, and with his friends. Once you've decided on your organizing structure, you'll want to either scan or add photos into subfolders. For example, my mother-in-law's book had one large file with subfolders for the 1960s, 1970s, etc.

The third step is to choose a digital photobook maker. You can drive to the photo developer and have them organize the book for you. You can also choose software like Creative Memories' StoryMaker Plus or Shutterfly which will give you fancy, decorated pages. I chose Creative Memories for my mother-in-law's book and had the book published through a different online developer. For my husband's book, which I didn't want to be fancy or have much journaling, I chose Walgreens. Their software was easy to use. Work on just one subfolder at a time! This is key. As you work, you may decide not to use certain photos to fit the templates your software provides. Try not to sweat that. :-) You can always print those photos or use them in another project.

My husband's book arrived about I week after I completed it. He was thrilled and I felt forgiven for my failure to print photos or to scrapbook them at all. He now has a short book with the most treasured photos in it from the last five years. It's not as great as having a paper scrapbook with tons of journaling, but he sure didn't seem to mind. You could make a great photobook this weekend and be guilt-free...for a while anyway.

Fitness Forays

Yes I am still with the program. Just being a bad blogger. I know you have all been suffering silently as you wait for my update. LOL

I did Shred level 3 and survived. Circuit 1 is very easy. Then your legs and abs are tortured. Shred is the best but I only like doing it on days I don't weight train. For the other days I have been checking out some great new stuff. The one I will tell you about today is www.nikewomen.com. It's free! Create your mi and tell the site whether you want cardio, strength or both. You are then given a completely different workout as many days a week that you sign up for (4 being max).

Either online or via the free iPhone app, you can view the exercises via video. If you have an iPhone you can use the built-in timer that ends with a whistle. If you dont, you can print the workout off and use your own timer. Most exercises are done for 2 minutes which makes it challenging, but you determine the pace which makes it easier. I watched the videos before I worked out. It's too disruptive otherwise. Workouts last 20 minutes.

I love listening to my own music for these workouts and the variety as well. If you sign up, add me as your buddy to get the competitive motivation flowing. You earn points for exercising.

Finally I lost a pound. I am using a different eating plan that I love. It's just like body for life only you get 1-2 less carb portions, 3 fat servings (your goal weight in calories), and 1 treat (goal weight in calories). The treat days are when you are not "buffing." I love the idea of a treat and not counting calories too!

Happy Mothers Day to all you moms!

The Gardener

My children and I read this today as part of our gardening study. What an incredible book! The pictures are gorgeous and the story is moving. It is set during the Depression which made it doubly educational. Buy or check this book out for your kids or grandkids. You won't be sorry!

Daily Inspiration

I find I need the daily inspiration of prayer and Bible reading to live the Christian life. After all, even the daily inspiration doesn't keep me from blowing it. I know that I'm more likely to walk the walk when I'm inspired this way, however, than when I'm not.

When I bought Jillian Michael's Shred video, I decided to sign up for the free 30-day membership on her website. (Before clicking, be aware that her choice of workout attire isn't modest)  While I haven't been doing her daily scheduled workouts or using her daily menus, I have really enjoyed her daily emails. It's a different topic every day--short and sweet. If you need regular inspiration (who doesn't?) I highly recommend it. What else do you use to stay inspired?

Today I am taking my planned day off from working out. I'm a little bit discouraged about my progress weight-wise. I've stayed exactly the same weight. I need to focus on the increased fitness I am enjoying. I will persevere and if I get no results, I will change things up. (I'm really just trying to convince myself ;-) Have a wonderful week!

How to Become a Drinker

I have been doing better on drinking water today. I bought this water bottle last summer that holds a day's worth of water to remind me to drink enough. I am using it again and will try to sip constantly throughout the day. I believe it keeps the hungries away and keeps one from retaining water.

This morning I took a planned sleep in. I have been missing sleep. My dh however got up and did Level 1 Shred without me. I was really happy when he said that after increasing his weights to better match my level, he couldn't imagine doing it twice in a row! LOL

This morning (later) I did upper body and an intense cardio workout I will describe more of later. For now, check out my friend Mell's fitness blog for inspiration at http://keepingitsimpleintas.blogspot.com

Misery Loves Company

I believe that my husband is the primary reason I have continued to work out for the past 18 years. This morning my dh asked if he could do the Shred level 1 video with me. I agreed and he agreed it was a good workout. He was definitely sweating! I was thrilled that I had no exercise asthma. My fitness has improved and it's so much easier to exercise when you can breathe. It was just like my dh to suggest we do the workout twice in a row next time. NOT. LOL

You may not be married to a workout nut like I am, but I bet you can find a friend who is or who would like to be! Even if you find an online workout buddy, your chances of success are much greater. Have a great weekend!
